CAP Module: Compassion – Acceptance – Mindfulness

This module supports your full presence in the present moment, helps you to define your values, and suggests new ways for you to feel better and move forward in the direction of your values and goals.

The module consists of two parts:

1) Values: What are your most important values?

2) Ways to address difficulties and move in the direction of your values.

The module includes activities and experiential exercises to better assimilate each step and practice being present in the moment. The module’s activities are organized in the same order in which they are presented in this manual. Discussions are planned for each activity, and they take place either in groups or pairs. At the end of each activity, therapists will review what you learned, what you liked and what your least favorite activity was, and share what was experienced. Homework will be provided to facilitate practicing the lessons learned from the activities. At the end of each activity, a snack will be served to allow participants an opportunity to mingle and exchange experiences.

Learning Objectives:

After completing the activities in this module, each participant should be able to achieve the following objectives:

1. The participant will be able to be more present in the moment.

2. The participant will be able to recognize their most important values.

3. The participant will know and be able to implement new strategies to feel better.

WITH CBT: Psycho educational group meant for people in relationship WITH a participant in the CBT Module

The WITH Module is a psycho educational group meant for people in relationship WITH a participant in the CBT Module

Although the CBT Module is meant for young adults suffering from a first psychotic episode, the WITH Module offers to people in relationship with the young adult means to better understand the experience of the person living a first psychotic episode as well as of his close family. As in the case of the CBT Module, the WITH program comprises 4 sections with a total of 24 group activities animated by 2 therapists. In the past, the CBT Module (cognitive behavioural therapy) was successfully presented to many young adults living a first psychotic episode. We noticed that people close to the patient (parents, brothers or sisters, partners) expressed an interest to have more information regarding the activities of the CBT Module. The WITH Module was specifically conceived for close family and friends of the patient.

Here are the general objectives of the WITH module:

At the end of the WITH module, close family and friends to the patient will be able to:

1) Understand the impact of a first psychotic episode on the person having it as well as on his close family and friends;

2) Accompany and support the young adult through his first psychotic episode;

3) Identify the means in order to reduce the consequences and discomfort related to the first psychotic episodes for the young adult and his (her) close family and friends;

4) Exchange with other people living a similar situation and share means with them in order to feel better;

5) Understand the implications of being in relationship with a person suffering from a first psychotic episode;

6) Maintain a positive attitude and keep the hope of recovery of the person having a first psychotic episode;

7) Take advantage of cognitive behavioural strategies in order to minimize the difficulties associated with a first psychotic episode;

8) Adapt to stressful situations and be able to control the symptom related to stress;

9) Collaborate in finding a plan in order to avoid a relapse.

General objective: The « CBT » module aims at understanding our symptoms better and finding new ways to deal with them and feel better about ourselves. The module consists of four parts, wich are 1) Stress : how it affects me, 2) Testing hypotheses and looking for alternatives, 3) Drugs, alcohol and how I feel, and 4) Coping and competence.

Each part is described as we encounter it in the related ativities. The CBT module follows the order of the activities in this workbook. Discussions are planned for each activity and are carried out, either in pairs or with the whle group discussing each topic. Following each activity, we will review what has been learned, what was liked and what was experiences. Each activity will end a snack and socialization period.

Coping & Competence Module : Participant’s Workbook

General objective: At the end of the program, the participant will be able to evaluate the importance of a stressful event in his life and determine if he is able or not, to modify this event. If the event is perceived as being modifiable, the participant will use means aimed at working on the problem. If the event is perceived impossible to modify, the participant will use means to act on his emotions. His active participation in the program will thus permit him to identify his personal resources and the ones present at this time in his environement, to use them, and to reduce the negative effects of stress in his life using appropriate strategies of controlling the « oncoming » symptoms on his sickness.

I am super, my self-esteem module : Participant’s Workbook and Clinician’s supplement
